Awareness cum training programme on PPV & FRA held at ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Gonikoppal, Kodagu


Awareness cum training programme on PPV & FRA 2001 has been organized at ICAR- KVK, Gonikoppal in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, ITMU on 8th March 2023. Shri. Veerendra Kumar K.V, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection), ICAR-KVK, Gonikoppal welcomed the guests and participants. Dr.Rajendiran, Head, CHES, Chettalli outlined and explained about the purpose of the programme and spoke about the importance of Biodiversity prevailing in the district which has to be properly documented through the agency of PPV & FRA which was followed by lighting of lamp by the dignitaries. Shri. Devaiah K.A.Head Incharge, ICAR-KVK, Gonikoppal in his address explained about the importance of Intellectual Properties Rights and the benefits of PPV&FRA for the farmers. Dr.Nanaiah, Assistant Professor, College of Forestry, Ponnampet spoke about the importance of Biodiversity and conservation in the District. Dr.Pitchaimuthu M, Principal Scientist, Division of Vegetable crops, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru explained about the role and importance of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act (PPV&FRA).He stressed on the farmer’s rights and provisions for registering farmers varieties present in the act. Dr.Akshitha, Scientist, ICAR-IISR, Regional Station, Appangala also spoke about Varietal wealth of Spices crops and DUS testing in cardamom, black pepper, turmeric and ginger.

Dr.Muralidhara, Scientist, ICAR- CHES,Chettalli explained about Conservation of fruit crops of Kodagu District. Mr.Shri.Napanda Poonacha,Progressive Planter, Suntikoppa sharing his experiences in registration of varieties under PPV & FRA act to the gatherings. The compendium on PPV and FRA (in Kannada) brought out by KVK, was released on this occasion. Subject Matter Specialists of KVK,Gonikoppal, State Govt. officials, media people participated in the programme. Planters / growers response and discussion has been taken place after the presentation. The planters have shown keen interest to participate in the interaction. On the occasion, an exhibition was also organized to exhibits back pepper, Different vegetables and rice varieties, wild fruits identified by the farmers. The programme was concluded with vote of thanks and the programme was compared by Shri.Prabhakara B. SMS (Horticulture), ICAR-KVK Gonikoppal. A total of 113 farmers/ planters are actively participated in the programme.
